Compliance claims follow exact-system evidence. Unless a product section explicitly says otherwise, this is not hands-on hardware testing. How PlugInSolarCheck checks evidence and handles corrections.
Quick answer
Choose the complete system before the headline wattage
There is no single best plug-in solar kit for everyone. First check the exact system evidence, then compare panel capacity, maximum AC output, mounting, supplied components, price and how much electricity you use in daylight. “Plug-and-play solar panels” still need that complete-system check.
Current direct partner offer
Thunder Bolt: £20 off for PlugInSolarCheck readers
Thunder Energy has activated code PLUGSLR20. It takes £20 off either current Bolt kit. These two exact Bolt references now have direct ENA Connect Direct records retained by PlugInSolarCheck, so they are treated as ENA-confirmed compliant. The commercial partnership is separate from that compliance evidence.

Product-level evidence
Verified UK plug-in solar systems
These seven UKSOL systems retain direct ENA evidence and are shown in the shared comparison below. The two Thunder Bolt systems above also have direct ENA records. Other exact references can still be shown as compliant when the current ENA-derived snapshot lists them compliant; the tracker labels that snapshot provenance separately rather than treating it as a different legal compliance tier. Retail availability is separate, and compliance does not make a system a commercial recommendation.

What should a plug-in solar kit include?
A complete system may include solar panel(s), a compatible microinverter, manufacturer-specified connection equipment, the plug and lead where applicable, mounting for the chosen installation type, instructions and documentation, plus exact product identification for compliance checking. Buying miscellaneous panels plus a microinverter does not automatically produce a compliant UK plug-in system. Read the current UK rules and check the exact system.
400–500W or an 800W plug-in solar kit?
Smaller one-panel route
Worth comparing where daytime base load is modest or mounting area is limited. Check shading, orientation and whether the complete system—not a loose component—matches your property.
Two-panel / higher DC capacity
Worth comparing where there is more useful daytime demand and suitable mounting area. Panel DC wattage and AC output are different: a qualifying system can have higher panel capacity while its mains-connected output stays within the applicable limit.
Use the detailed 800W guide for the limit, and the calculator to test likely daytime self-consumption.

Smallest entry route
A smaller, exact complete system may be a suitable starting point when daylight use and mounting space are limited.
Higher daytime household demand
Compare larger-panel configurations only where shading, space and live daytime use justify them; the applicable AC ceiling still matters.
Balcony installation
Compare only mounting documented for the exact panel and structure, then check permission, wind exposure and cable routing.
Read the balcony guideGarden or ground mount
A ground-mount kit can be easier to position, but needs an appropriate surface, secure mounting and a safe route for the supplied connection equipment.
Renters and flat owners
Permission, lease and fixing constraints come before product comparison. A portable battery is a different product category, not an alternative compliance claim.
Start with evidence, then compare the system
Retailer labels such as “plug-in”, “plug-and-play” or “solar panel with plug socket” do not prove that an exact product qualifies for UK mains connection. Check the complete product and its evidence before comparing convenience or price.
Mounting still changes the answer
Match the exact panel and mounting system to the surface, dimensions, wind loading and manufacturer instructions. Balcony, façade, ground, flat-roof and pitched-roof jobs are not interchangeable. For rails and shared structures, start with the balcony guide.
Can I add a battery to a plug-in solar kit?
Do not assume battery-integrated systems fall under the same solar-only route. Check the exact configuration and its evidence; portable power stations and plug-in batteries follow different product and connection rules. Read battery guidance for plug-in solar.
Estimate before you compare
Test your own complete cost, shading and daytime use before judging savings.
Try the calculator →Looking for off-grid solar or a portable power station?
Portable batteries, solar generators and independent shed or garden-office systems power their own intended outlets. They are not mains-connected plug-in solar systems.
Frequently asked questions
What is a plug-in solar kit?
A complete, manufacturer-defined solar product intended to offset live household use through the qualifying socket-connected route. Check its exact system evidence, supplied parts and mounting.
Are plug-and-play solar panels legal in the UK?
A label alone is not enough. The current Great Britain route applies to qualifying exact solar-only systems; check the rules and the complete system evidence before buying or connecting.
What size plug-in solar kit should I buy?
Start with daytime electricity use, usable mounting space, orientation and shading. A larger DC panel capacity does not mean a higher permitted AC output.
Can a plug-in solar kit use an 800W inverter?
The route limits maximum rated AC output to 800W and maximum apparent output to 800VA. Check the exact complete system, not an inverter label alone.
Can I add a battery?
Do not assume so. Battery-integrated products and plug-in batteries are outside the current solar-only route unless authoritative evidence says otherwise.
Do I still need to notify the electricity network?
Follow the current network notification or registration requirements for the exact system and your circumstances; read the current rules before connecting.
